I have a Motor Guide trolling motor that quit working on speed 1 and 3. Took it to Tom at Motor TECH in Suffolk,Va. for repairs. Tom told me what the problem was ,and he was right. The solder joints on the 1 post and the 3 post was different and poorly soldered. It seems this is a commom problem.Maybe Motor Guide needs to hold soldering classes. Saved me a lot of bucks.Thought I would pass it along to everyone......Waiting for cool weather.... crappie1133

Thank you for the info....should I aquire a motorguide t/m I will certainly check that out before I get on the water and get stranded for sure. most of the lakes here are t/m's only....thank you.

This solder fatigue is caused by vibration. Vibration fatigue occurs quiet often with solder joints. We performed vibration tests of solder joints when I worked with NASA. I believe GM had a lot of problems due to vibration fatigue on solder joints of their windshield wiper control board. A lot of vehicle recalls are the result of vibration fatigue. Solder joint fatigue causes lots of failures of our marine electronics. Passing this on also.

A porpoising boat is big contributor to solder fatigue.

So is a slightly bent/nicked prop and it will damage seals. You might not feel it but you can bet your sweet bippy that solder joints and seals can.

BarnacleBill and Cane pole, Thanks for the input. I never considered this,. Tom showed me the solder joints and they were different from the rest, like two different people did the soldering and he said it had been speed 1 and 3 in the past. Good information though, Something I had never would have thought about. Thanks again guys.......crappie1133
