The Di will work while stationary but it will show the same display over and over again just like the 2D sonar.

If you need the wider 2D sonar while jigging than I suppose you should go with the unit that has it. However, Di sonar is easier to use to help spot those new spots to fish as Rickie stated above.

I like having both in the 346c, but that narrower beam compared to the Elite 4x is bothersome. Any problem in my thinking?
Like Greg said...the DI will show returns that are in the fan shaped beam even while stationary...but the image will not "paint" the pretty DI picture as is associated with a "normal" DI image...

For example...if the boat were moving and then "passed over" a fish...the DI would "paint" that fish echo as a white dot on the screen...because the fish was not in the fan shaped beam, then it was in the fan shaped beam, and then it wasn't in the fan shaped again...

If the boat were stationary...and the fish were stationary ....the fish would be in the fan shaped beam every time the unit "pinged" ....so the unit would paint that fish echo in the DI image as a continuous white line across the screen ...until either the boat moved past the fish or the fish moved out of the fan shaped beam...

So DI will work with the boat stationary...you just have to know how to interpret what you are seeing on the display...

The disadvantage of using the DI while vertical jiggin is that the DI beam is fan shaped and will not cover as much area in front of and behind the DI fan shaped beam ...(like a cone shaped 2d beam)....so it would be more difficult to keep your jig showing in the DI image view...

Brad ...I'm gonna ask Greg a question thru this post as it possibly pertains to your post (and I don't know the answer myself)....

Greg...can the 346ci DI use the XTM 9 WIDE DI 20 T ...?? (Which has the 83/200 2d in addition to the DI)...

    Exclamation Just FYI ....

Brad .... here's what you'd see, if not moving, when using a DI sonar :

This picture was taken while not moving, and sitting over the edge of a brush pile. The long streaks across the screen are branches that are being continuously pinged by the DI sonar.

    Rickie,
The 346ci DI lacks the circuitry and software to be able to utilize the 83kHz sonar of the XTM-9-WIDE-DI-20-T transducer. So the answer is “No” although it could use the DI and 200kHz 2D sonar portion of that transducer – this would be like spending money on something that you could not use.

Only the larger sized DI units (858c HD DI, 958c HD DI, and 1158c DI) all have the circuitry and software to be able to utilize the 83kHz and would be able to use that transducer.

Well dang Brad...I thought we might have a "lightbulb" moment with this other xducer...

    I guess not...

Well, now at least we all know the XTM 9 WIDE DI 20 T will not work with the 346...
