Like Greg said...the DI will show returns that are in the fan shaped beam even while stationary...but the image will not "paint" the pretty DI picture as is associated with a "normal" DI image...
For example...if the boat were moving and then "passed over" a fish...the DI would "paint" that fish echo as a white dot on the screen...because the fish was not in the fan shaped beam, then it was in the fan shaped beam, and then it wasn't in the fan shaped again...
If the boat were stationary...and the fish were stationary ....the fish would be in the fan shaped beam every time the unit "pinged" ....so the unit would paint that fish echo in the DI image as a continuous white line across the screen ...until either the boat moved past the fish or the fish moved out of the fan shaped beam...
So DI will work with the boat stationary...you just have to know how to interpret what you are seeing on the display...
The disadvantage of using the DI while vertical jiggin is that the DI beam is fan shaped and will not cover as much area in front of and behind the DI fan shaped beam ...(like a cone shaped 2d beam)....so it would be more difficult to keep your jig showing in the DI image view...
