    Default Down scan question

I have an elite 7x. I haven't learned to set it. If the boat is still just what should I see at 20' depth? Does the boat have to move to get the picture? If I'm sitting over an object "tree" can I just sit and look at the tree?

You need some forward motion to "see". DI is a very thin slice of sonar, so to get a pic of a tree, you will need to travel across that tree in one direction or another. Think of it like a medical MRI with the machine taking pictures of your body....little slices like a slice of cucumber that they put back together to get the full image.

As Vic posted you need some movement. If you idled over a a spot and it showed five fish, five individual returns at different depths and then turned and stopped and sat over the same five fish it would show five horizontal lines across the df screen.

This is what I see when sitting still over the branches of a tree/brushpile :

Anytime your ping is constantly hitting the object below it, you'll get a return signal from that position ... resulting in a constantly updated "mark" on your screen. If you aren't moving, and the object isn't moving ... the signal is interpreted as coming from a stationary solid object, so it's going to show on your screen as a continuous line (history).
