Everyone’s hearing is different. I used to be able to easily hear the 200kHz transmit pulse (more likely a harmonic of the 200kHz) when I was younger but not so much now-a-days. The frequencies that are used for most sonar is beyond the hearing range for humans and fish so they should not hear it though the presence of your boat may spook them.
Don’t believe me about the differences in your hearing? I finally busted my sons pulling this little stunt on me and my wife: they downloaded some sort of hearing test to their smartphones and would randomly play them while in the same room with us. They appeared to suddenly just bust out in laughter about nothing… then we finally figured it out. They were playing very high pitched sounds that they (with younger ears) could hear but that we could not. Try searching for “Hearing Test Tones” and test yourself. I couldn’t hear the 14kHz tone… but still enjoy my loud rock and roll music!
How a transducer is connected to a boat can make the sound louder than on other boats. I have experienced this many times. Some will put a piece of inner tube rubber between the transducer and the trolling motor to try and reduce this.
If you can hear your transducer from the back of your boat and the ducer is in the water something is definitely wrong. Yeah it's normal for the ducer to make a clicking noise and be heard if it's out of the water. My Lowrance US2 adapter should be getting here tomorrow, I hope it's not too loud.
