    Default Still Learning

I have a HDS 7 that replaced a Lowrance X510c. Kept the same transducers and power cord. If i install Structurescan do i need to buy a power cord or will the power cord that comes with the Structurescan be all that I need? Should I purchase Structurescan 1 or 2. When using this unit on fish arches I have a hard time seeing any thing on the screen. I am in shallow water. Is my ping speed to high, my sensitiventy not high enough. Could be that it is just ME!!!!! Maybe I don't know how to interpret what I am seeing. The bottom, alarms an other readings seems to work fine so I don;t suspect transducer problems Seems like every time I use this sonar I learn something new. Any comments are appreciated Thanks to the best forum on the web. You guys are the best.

Please explain "when using this unit on fish arches". What is the sensitivity set at? I would look around and buy a used LSS-1. I have both and can see no real difference.

I can't answer your inquiries about the Lowrance stuff but I can give some insight on fish arches...

    Why fish arch....(Lowrance.com sonar tutorial)

The reason fish show as an arch is because of the relationship between the fish and the cone angle of the transducer as the boat passes over the fish. As the leading edge of the cone strikes the fish, a display pixel is turned on. As the boat passes over the fish, the distance to the fish decreases. This turns each pixel on at a shallower depth on the display. When the center of the cone is directly over the fish, the first half of the arch is formed. This is also the shortest distance to the fish. Since the fish is closer to the boat, the signal is stronger and the arch is thicker. As the boat moves away from the fish, the distance increases and the pixels appear at progressively deeper depths until the cone passes the fish.

If the fish doesn't pass directly through the center of the cone, the arch won't be as well defined. Since the fish isn't in the cone very long, there aren't as many echoes to display, and the ones that do show are weaker. This is one of the reasons it's difficult to show fish arches in shallow water. The cone angle is too narrow for the signal to arch.

Remember, there must be movement between the boat and the fish for the echo to "arch"...

On HDS 2d fish look like blobs not arches. LSS has its own power cord, but you can use the yellow lead as wakeup call from HDS. The wiring directions usually comes with the unit. I just noticed this post. Any questions?

What do Fish Look Like on a Lowrance Fishfinder - YouTube

At the end of this tube, the man will say it isn't a fishfinder.

I have HDS and use di overlay on 2d. I look for white spots or blobs on the 2d screen. Lot of the colors etc. have a lot to do with your palettes. Just cause I see white spots don't mean you willl unless you choose certain palettes.

You guys are the best. Thanks for some new ideas to try. I am fishing a pond I have fished for 50 years and the water is 15' deep, max..I may not have a very wide cone angle. That could be the problem. I have not seen my jig on my sonar and that could also be the problem. I knew the best would speak up and give me some great ideas. Thanks again for the help. Can't wait to try this out.

There is a lot of good HDS information here.
