Your DF may continue to "scroll" ... but it will also continue to show you the brushpile (depending on the type of unit & your ability to maintain boat position).
While I really don't "hover over" a brushpile, that I may encounter, seeing as how I mostly cast jigs (rather than vertical jig them) ... I have three options to pinpoint that brushpile, in order to cast to it.
Option 1 - marker bouy (placed well off to one side of the brushpile)
Option 2 - GPS waypoint on my DF (split screen showing waypoint/route & depth/down image)
Option 3 - mentally triagulate the spot (using boat position & objects on the near shoreline)
Depending on your DF's capabilities ... yes, you can "troll over a tree top, mark it, and go back and continually see it .... " You would have to have GPS capability, in order to "mark it" (with your electronics) ... but Options 1 & 3 can be used, if you do not.
