Gut instinct tells me that you just need to play with it & get the settings to show you the best screen picture it can .... preferrably while "on the water" (& not simulator/emulator mode).
It's going to show you the same thing, front or back mounted, if the settings are the same. The biggest difference in a "regular depthfinder" and a down image depthfinder ... is the shape of the ping cone. Read thru the thread about my Elite 5DSI, and you'll see plenty of good pics & charts that explain the differences in reg df 2d cones & DI cones. You'll also learn that a true DI needs to be moving to produce a good image, and that TM mounted DI images can be momentarily distorted if/when you turn the TM head. That has to do with the shape of the DI cone, which is more of a wide & narrow cone than a regular 2d DF cone (which is a circle).
