    Default Hb 581 di

I also have a new 581 on the trolling motor of my boat and can't get the picture to show much detail. Looks just like a reg depth finder.
Will it work better on the back or do i need to do more tweeking of settings?

Gut instinct tells me that you just need to play with it & get the settings to show you the best screen picture it can .... preferrably while "on the water" (& not simulator/emulator mode).
It's going to show you the same thing, front or back mounted, if the settings are the same. The biggest difference in a "regular depthfinder" and a down image depthfinder ... is the shape of the ping cone. Read thru the thread about my Elite 5DSI, and you'll see plenty of good pics & charts that explain the differences in reg df 2d cones & DI cones. You'll also learn that a true DI needs to be moving to produce a good image, and that TM mounted DI images can be momentarily distorted if/when you turn the TM head. That has to do with the shape of the DI cone, which is more of a wide & narrow cone than a regular 2d DF cone (which is a circle).

Thanks. If it distorts when TM is turned then that tells me it may work better on the transom. The back of the boat will stay more stable that the
    TM. Any hints on settings?

How about posting a Screen Snapshot of what you are seeing along with the menu settings you are using. This will help everyone recommend changes to make.
