    which do i need to buy or do i need a map at all i have never used a side imager

    Jackie... The maps are dependant on which unit you plan to purchase....The vendor map cards come in different price ranges with different features...

    Most units that have GPS chartplotting capabilities also have a built-in "base map"...but they are generally not the same level of detail as the separate map cards that can be used in them...

    Which sonar unit are you interested in...(or already have bought)..??

    Lots of useful info here for map cards and their brand capability...

    You don't need a map card to do side imaging. The map card will give you the lake depth/contours so you have a starting point to locate fishing spots. The side imaging will tell you what's in the water.

    do you already own a sidescan unit? to answer your question. i think for most people, including me ,i think that the answer would be no . you do not need a mapping card, but they are kool. i think for the most part these electronics that we use are just expensive toys for big boys.now there a few that really need all thhis fancy stuff but there tournament people trying to make money.so anyways welcome to the wonderful world of the fishing money pit were there will always something new to buy.......Rofl

    For people who fish in lakes that have a lot of standing timber, river sections etc. a good mapping card can be invaluable. Knowing that you are in the channel can be the difference between making it back in one piece and punching a big hole in your rig, or worse. A good mapping card is also very valuable for for excluding or including areas in your fishing day. If for instance you get on a pattern where you are only catching fish in a certain depth, or on drops, you can easily and quickly find and fish areas that match your pattern. If you go and fish a new lake, the map card can cut your learning curve way down.

    There's a chance you may not need it, but it's another tool that can help you be more productive on the water, when it counts.
