Default Transducer location for Humminbird® 798 Ci SI.....REALLLY??

I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a Humminbird® 798 Ci Si . One question I have for those who have these or similar units. I was told that the transducer for these needs to be mounted so it protrudes BELOW the bottom of the transom...which would make it awful vulnerable to breaking especially with all the flooded timber in the lake I fish.

Is that transducer mounting location correct? What do I do to protect it without limiting function?

Many that have Si units on fiberglass boats opt to mount the more expensive Si transducers up higher on the transom (or jackplate like RiceRocket did) to protect them and install a second inside-the-hull transducer and splitter cable for 2D sonar readings at high boat speeds. Parts needed for this: XP-9-20 inside-the-hull DualBeam transducer and AS-Si-DB-Y transducer splitter cable.

You only need the transducer lower than the hull if you want to try to get sonar readings at high(er) speeds.
