VaGunTrader, You could own a canoe, and find out that SI/DI make a huge difference in the way you fish, and maybe your success. Even with DI, you could run through an area you've fished for years, and you'll know more after one pass with DI than you ever learned with 2D. Add GPS into it, and you've really got the tools to do the job.

Save money on the boat, invest it in the electronics, you will not be disappointed. And you aren't paying interest to the bank for your boat! That's the way to do it.

They have worked a lot of kinks out of them but as you know there will be some problems with them and people with them being the problem,right under the boat you will see structure because that where it suppose to look,every fishfinder you buy you have to tinker with it till you learn it.

I have a HB 596 HD DI that I'm gonna sell soon. It's a real nice unit..has both regular sonar and dedicated DI on a color screen. The only reason I'm going to sell it is I bought another SI unit. The 596 was bought in March of 2011. The cheapest I can find a new one is $515... so I'm going to ask $400 plus shipping for the unit. Nobody is trying to fool anybody Mr. Kosmo. Affordability is a relative term. When the question includes "good for locating structure" the answers will most likely be based on the latest technology designed for locating structure, which just so happens to be Down Scan Imaging (DSI) at the present time in the recreational fishing market. In the future, please don't put such a negative spin on your opinion of other peoples honest answers to an honest question.

ok..... i see what your saying, but hes looking for a quality sonar for the leased amount possible.i have traditional sonar, di/si. im giving him my honest opinion that di will , not for the money,make any difference.example;;; when the boat crosses over a brush pile with crappie suspended over or to the side the traditional sonar will show the same thing as the di. ive seen on this site were a person showed a picture using this same scenario using di.he said after viewing the picture that this determined his fishing technique.yes he did have a pritty ptcture but no he didnt see anything that traditional sonar wouldnt show .smoke and brag. this looks good to people that dont no. the author of this thread wants to spend little money but still have quality unit. imo..... traditional sonar is all that is needed. yes i have three of these high dollar units and i might get another but thats me. i keep throwing money into the fishing pit.

if one is to disagree with another ,he must be a little bit negative ,not arrogant,and the question was a good cheap unit to find brush and this means 2 d sonar,I was young with children once and could NOT ADFORD EVEN NICE REELS and so I did with what I had and we must respect his value on money till he can adford those things that others have. I rather have cheaper equipment and use money wisely for that which is real important, I love to fish , but there are things more important

I couldn't agree with you more kosmo.

And thats why i recomennded the fishmark 480. It really is an excellent unit for the money he'll spend. I have the 1197, and 997 hb models now, but that 480 served me well. I also have a 640C fishmark as my backup in case i ever have trouble with my newer units.
