I now have a Humminbird dual beam 20/60 degree beam on my trolling motor I use the split screen a lot while fishing brush piles upto 25' of water.. Is it a good idea to add a Down Imaging unit with 16/25 degree beams?
The way I see it, I will be giving up 2/3 of lake bottom view for a clearer picture, is it worth it?
S.I is not in my future.
Thanks
I like my DI.
2d cone shaped sonar beam vs DI fan shaped sonar beam...
Each time the unit pings.. It processes the echo data in the sonar beam shape and plots that info onto the unit screen to the far right of the screen (a few pixels wide) pushing the "previous" pings data info to the left on the screen (history)...
If the fan shaped DI sonar beam is not moving... The unit is "pinging" the exact same small "slice" of water plotting "copies" of the same echo data onto the screen again and again...
The fan shaped DI sonar beam has to ping a "new" slice of water each time so that when the processor "stacks" these slices together on the screen... The slices will build an image that we see as a DI image...
While DI is fantastic for descerning what structure looks like ...the DI has to be moving... Whereas the 2d does not...

these di units do work and i believe that you would enjoy what you will see but if you only use the di you will be giving up that cone shaped sonar return that would be extending out in front of your boat if transducer mounted on trolling motor.if this type of coverage works for you then you will be happy with it. as far as increasing the amount of fish that you will catch.i doubt that it would help and i respectfully question anyone that says that it makes a difference in the amount of fish that they catch
I like my si di.
i have the 898 and crappie appeare as tiny blips on di while the regular 2d they appear as nice pretty arches, di makes determining rock and brush nice but as far as the fish i like the 2d better, but maybe its just me. it is nice to look at 2d si and di though.
All of the HB sonar beams depictions are on the Humminbird website under the "Technologies" tab..
Then under "Humminbird Sonar"..click "Learn More",,,
HumminBird Sonar
The Lowrance beams I have in my "Attachments" folder...they are a collection I have gained thru posts from other people....
These sonar beam depictions are the best sonar tutorials I have found to help explain "area of coverage" when posting in forums...
