    1. Is there a distance/time travel log that tracks along as you go down river?
    2. Can this be reset?

    Yes, there is.

Starting from either your sonar page or chart page ... click on the following buttons in this order:

    menu
    overlay data
show (should have X in box if you want data to show on screen)
    configure
    menu
    add
    trip calculator
    trip distance & trip time
    menu
    done configuring

You would then have the distance traveled (TRPD) and time spent traveling (TRPT) showing on your screen ... along with depth, temp, speed, and any other overlay data you've chosen.

To "reset" ... (or actually remove the trip data & reset everything to zeros) follow this sequence:

    menu
    settings
    system
    trip calculator
trip active ... (should have X in box if you want calculator to accumulate data)
reset ... whichever data you wish to zero out
    menu
    enter
    menu
menu ... and you're back to your sonar/chart screen

You can also MOVE each of the different overlays to a section of the screen of your choosing. You will notice that option when you have the "Configure Item Locations & Sizes" screen on, and click on the Menu button ... it's the first/top option in that menu box.

Now, don't hate me if this info is inaccurate ... I'm manually running my unit "in home", so I'm not able to collect & then change the trip data, like I could if I were running the unit "on the water" (since I'm not moving, no data is being collected). I would assume that, if you wanted to collect the trip data ... but NOT have it show "on screen" ... then the second series of button pushes (the "to reset" series) would be all you'd need to engage. To see the trip statistics, at any time, you'd just have to enter in the first 4 button pushes ... which would take you to the Trip Calculator screen, where your trip data would be shown. The first series of button pushing instructions is included to show you how to make the trip statistics show up on your screen "all the time" ... IF that is what you would want to see/monitor during the trip.

Any problems following my instructions ... PM me, or post your questions on here, and I'll work with you (or correct my mistakes) to make it easier to follow.

The unit will be here any day and I will install on the kayak. For this event I will probably not have the transducer even in the water. I may plant it to the bottom of the yak with plumbers putty, but I don't want it hanging over the side with the Frog Gear arm I installed. I will probably remove the FG arm to save weight and keep it out of the way.

Lowrance makes a thru hull retractable transducer mount specifically for kayaks. That's your best option.

I don't have sculpers and for this trip what is going on down under is of no concern.

Not everyone checks back on this thread on a daily basis, so it may take a few days to get an answer. You might also consider starting a separate thread in this forum, seeing as how this thread is quite long & may deter some from checking through it.

I used my E5DSI again last Wed and had better luck pushing all the buttons and getting it to work better after adjusting the contrast to view it in the sunlight but it is awfully cluttered when it is shaded. are you guys constantly adjusting the contrast also? Another problem is I seem to have to adjust the depth range so it wont lose the bottom as I like to zoom the screen in where I can see it. Lastly there is an annoying (You crossed GPS something) alarm that keeps popping up and I can't find out hove to turn it off. I did not see it under the alarms menu. Thanks for the help folks.

    Flint,
    - Once you set your contrast, it should generally stay set for the given water conditions. If you're like me and having trouble seeing the screen in the sun, go to Walmart and buy a static cling screen protector (EVERYONE should do this regardless) and apply that. It helps. Also try using the white background. Or black and white so there is more contrast that can be seen in the bright sun. I use white background because I can see it best. To each his own but that may help.
    - Turn your depth range to auto
    - If you are zooming in, it will zoom into the bottom on auto. If you want to zoom into a specific range, set your depth range to that range plus 5-10ft and you can then zoom in to say 30ft range. Make sense? Keep it on auto and it won't loose bottom
    - The alarm "crossed GPS something" sounds like it can be turned off under the "chart" menu. Try page 37 of the menu

You can download the menu here

Thank you, I will try your suggestions out next Wednesday but on a different lake. I did manage to get a 2gb micro card from a guy at work just in case I find something worth sharing.
