    Default determining depth

my lowrance electronics though a bit old and black and white has a depth bar to the side that indicates depth of what ever is on the screen not just the bottom, really helps with suspended fish, i just looked at a 700 series hummingbird and it had depth bars that went in 15' increments, not real exact to me, and with down imaging i saw no depth bars at all how do you tell how deep suspended fish are with these units, or can you?

Gobbler ... my Lowrance Elite 5DSI has a depth bar (rt side of screen) ... and it can also be put in "Fish ID" mode, where the "fish symbols" have their depth numbers right above them. The depth bar increments are relative to the depth range you have the unit set in ... on both brands. My LE5DSI also has short crossbars on the depth bar, marking 1ft depths @ 40ft ... 2ft depths @ 80ft. The HB DI units seem to only have their depth bars in increments of 10ft or greater, but with main depth crossbar lines going across the screen.

(I don't have a HB DI unit, for comparison, so I used this : Humminbird 700 Series :: Marine Fishfinders & Sonar GPS Combos )

The two different mfg's have similar technology, but can't show them in exactly the same way ... so, they have to program subtle differences into their products, to distinguish themselves apart from one another.

    ... cp

still with 5' increments doesn't that leave a bit of room for error, though i am glad to see they do have the depth bars on the down imaging, in the pics that i have viewed i never saw those.

You can push one of the arrow keys and freeze the screen, move the cursor to the fish and it will give you the exact depth at that point in the dialog box that pops up. Otherwise you have to make and educated guess by looking at the increment bars.
