a person on another site said that he thought that his 597ci hd/di had sonar problems similar to what your saying, after a software update. he said that it made it look grainy. i sent him a earlier software version to reinstall. i dont no if you can do the same with your unit

I'm gonna meddle a bit here.
Software has "Switches" or "Options" you need to flip when installing it.
As a "Firemans Dive" (back down the ladder) you should be able to reinstall the original software and start over.

Something unusual is Wrong. I don't believe any Company would make an upgrade that killed the unit!
They'd be right on top of that. So try the Mfg with a Letter about the problem.
I'd bet you get an answer pretty quick.

I suggest the same thing call Lowrance and get it straight from them like I am,that's why they have come up with a new software version to combat the problem's of the original 4.0.Not trying to bash Lowrance,just trying to help.
