    Default Adding Variable Speed Help

    Hey Canepole,
I am fairly new to this site and have been reading past posts about adding variable speed to a trolling motor. You seem to be the expert from what I have read. Help from anyone would really be appreciated. See attachment for what I have purchased. I have only one question. What should I use to act as a throttle to vary the speed? The hall effect throttle can be replaced with a potentiometer if it is designed to work with both applications. If you try to wire a potentiometer to replace the hall effect throttle, it might not work/or work worth a crap. Find a speed controller that is designed to run with a potentiometer control. Something like this will work.

12V-48V DC 25-75 AMP, High Current DC Motor Speed Controller (PWM)

What size motor are you putting it on? You need to consider max amps. The one Canepole references can be had for up to 75amps which would cover any trolling motor you wanted to put on it. The 50 amp one would cover just about all of them.

well, i already have this one and i made sure the amperage rating was covered. Since i jumped the gun and got this far, let me ask a couple more questions. Do you think a pot is worth trying? If not, could i just get a hall throttle and rremove the backward tension?
