Both trolling motor puck style, and transom mount transducers will work fine for his application. The term "thru-hull" when referring to a transducer describes a specific mounting style. Thru-hull transducers are designed with a threaded post mount. A hole is drilled through the hull and the transducer is secured into this hole with gaskets. Nuts threaded onto the threaded post of the transducer clamp the transducer gaskets to both the interior and exterior surfaces of the hull. It is called a thru-hull due to the fact that it literally and physically goes through the hull material. Not the right application for a kayak.
