    Default Parallel Battery Hook Up

I am kicking around the idea of hooking up two 12 volt deep cycle batteries in parallel to both crank my 40 HP Yamaha electric outboard and to run my 12 volt Minn Kota 55 lb Power Drive V2 trolling motor, fish finder, running lights, bilge pump, live well aerator, etc.

Am I asking for trouble by doing this?

    Thanks.

You need to keep your trolling motor batteries separate from your starting batteries. If you do like you suggest....then run your batts down trolling you won't be able to start the big motor. Also you want your electronics ( fish finder) connected to your starting battery....if you connect it to your trolling battery you will sometimes have interferance on your FF when your running the troling motor. The best way on your 55 lb. PD is to put two deep cycle batteries ( preferably group 31's in parallel to provide 12 volts just for your trolling motor only........this will give you enough batt to troll all day.

My buddy did this for years with no ill effects. He used 2 group 27 batteries hooked to an on-board charger. His motor was just a 25 HP which could also be rope started if needed but he never did have to. Possible drawbacks would be interference on your depth sounder from the trolling motor and like G said, running the batteries down far enough you couldn't start the motor (unless it also has rope start capability). Do not expect the Yamaha to keep both batteries fully charged because it just doesn't have the output to do both of them.

or you could do what I do, 1 battery for troller,1 battery for all accessories, and 1 start battery. I don't worry about one going down on me unless it has gone bad.
