The pics I posted above show how Humviewer shows the date. Anyone know of a 16th month?
Yes, there generally is a difference but judging from Humviewer it isn't sonar related. I'm sure there are plenty of variables involved in the quality of the snapshot, one being the resolution of the graphic captured in the snapshot. I can say for a fact that the screen displays the view in real time better than the quality of a snapshot taken on the unit. The snapshots taken by the unit are remarkably small in size, on the order of 47-55kb, so you wouldn't expect a very pretty or sharp image. I wouldn't want much more sd space occupied by the snapshot since the primary purpose of the pic is to jog my memory as to why I marked that particular waypoint when I'm on the lake. I prefer to view the recordings in humviewer at home because I can see it on a larger display and humviewer also has a number of useful tools such as estimating the height of an object based on it's shadow length and being able to take measurements of objects. It can also easily show your recorded track and marked waypoints overlaid in Google Earth. The fact remains that humviewer isn't generating sonar data, only interpreting it. When I want to play with the unit settings here at home, I play back the recording on the unit and can try different settings for sharpness, contrast, sensitivity, etc. You're obviously a rabid Lowrance fan and should probably be getting paid for spending so much of your free time here arguing your viewpoint. Your unit definitely takes pretty snapshots but the difference in snapshot quality isn't an indication of the sonar quality difference between the two.
Very impressive image from Lowrance @ 1.7 kph. Not so good for HB @ 1.6kph..But not one person has shown a side by side image sitting STILL over structure...I have asked for this several times but it seems to me that both sides are avoiding the issue..Tom did post an image sitting beside brush and if this is all a Lowrance or HB will do sitting still I have no need for either..

UPDATE: i have my pictures in a file on my computer. i do not know how to get them over to this site to display. i have questions on most of them. long story short i dont think moving the transducers did much good, am putting them back in the morning. i still am adamant that the sonar does not even compare to the cheapest sonar out there, as i have to spend days fine tuning it to show fish, when any cheap model out of the box will work immediately --then i say there has been many steps backward taken in this endevour. don"t even compare to any of the lesser downscans lowrance has. i am sure they will show fish when you are on them right out of the box. if all the fluff is over the structure scan , then i'd say it could be nice once you know how to use it, but i am questioning the dollar value to me, when the sonar is not even close to the 500 c fish elite i have on my trolling motor. i have been told there is an upgrade coming real soon, unless it address"s the sonar it will not mean much to me. at this point i am very tired trying to adjust this thing-----which should not be! it is at this point installed correctly---contrast on the structure scan can be set to show more or less fish, depending on how many white dots you want to see. many hours to determine the difference, for a real setting in my opinion. west wind tonight took me off the lake--i am very tired--overly tired almost trying to will this thing to work the way i want it to. a good nights rest and going fishing early on lake carlton----we will see----------

Crappiegirl, see the second post here http://www.crappie.com/crappie/perso...our-stuff.html for posting pictures from your computer. He didn't say so in his post but you may have to resize them.

I really wish you'd take it to someone who knows what they're doing to inspect it. I've never heard of anyone having so much trouble with multiple units. I don't know, perhaps you're expecting too much out of the unit? I can't understand why either the Hbird or the Lowrance is giving you so much trouble. All I know is that you've had such a tough time getting either unit to work while thinking it's installed correctly. You really, really need to have it checked out by someone who's experienced. I promise you, there is at least one simple thing that's being overlooked. I wish you were close enough for me to see what's up with it. Perhaps there is another Crappie.com member in your area that can help out. Have you tried posting for help on the Fl board?
As for the settings, the default settings right out of the box are dang near perfect and I wouldn't change a thing until I was more familiar with the operation of the unit. You can always reset them to default too.

That's not the way it works. No sonar, 2d, si, di is going to show a pic of discernable structure while sitting still. It's not like it's a camera image. It's a composite of sonar returns over time. So if you're sitting still it's just going to display the same return time after time and what you'll see is a streak of lines across the screen. You have to be moving to build the composite of returns over time which reveals structure.
