    Default Down-image software updates

i have a 798si and have updated the software for the down imaging, but have not yet been on the water. my question is - are these the same type of images provided by structure scan? reason i ask is someone told me that the lowrance was the true down image, while the humminbird just manipulated the image to where it appeared to be something like a structure scan image. thanks in advance.

hummingbird si units were not meant to be di.they dont have di element. lowrance does have di eliminate .hummingbird uses the two si eliments to get there di. the two si eliements send the signal away from the boat at an angle, but there is still coverage directly below the boat. no manipulation, what it sees is what you get.theres a weaker signal in the di area because of the lack of di element .for this reason lowrance will have better di quality . i hope this helps. if you have more questions please ask

Just as kosmo said the previous SI do not have their own dedicated DI crystals in the xducer..they use the info from the SI crystal and render the image to make the DI image...

The new HB units that are designated HD DI...do, in fact, have these dedicated crystals in the xducer which gives what you call "true DI"...

dont let anyone tell you that hummingbird does not have true di. thats not true.the si units use the si elements .both lwrance and hummingbird use there software to interpret the echos received from there transducer. the difference is lowrance has a dedicated di element that is pointed striate down hence they get a stronger echo return

ok - so lowrance has a better down image product, are they compatible with the humminbird 798 in regards to working simultaneously? i realize you cant link them together, just wondering how to make something work. i would like something larger with DI capability up front - and move the 798 to the console. thanks again.

are you saying that you want something with a bigger screen than the 500 series di units that have a dedicated di element in the hummingbird units,if so then no hummingbird does not offer that. i dont no for sure but lowrance and hummingbird use the same frequency. i would think that you would get cross talk between the to maybe someone else here nos for sure.P.s. im not trying to say that hummingbird di doesnot work. alot of poeple are very pleased with theres
