Fillet, it won't matter what brand you get, 2D will most likely not help you interpret DI, I'd say it's the other way around. Looking at DI, is more like a picture someone took with a camera, 2d displays most everything as a blob.
The HDS units have the overlay feature which is nice at times, so you can compare the 2d and di.

I really don't look to see fish on my Down imaging though. I'm looking for structure, laydowns or timber. Once I see that, I fish it. Good luck guys, and Faadan, have you worked out the settings on your unit?

Cub48 with Di, I have been sitting completely still and watch bait balls and fish swim right under me. It's pretty cool.

After looking around on the web a bit, I see a couple things Faadan. First, auto should be your setting on almost everything, contrast would be what you want to adjust. Just as with the LSS-1 movement will get you the best images, sitting still, will work, but it will show more like 2d, if a fish swims through, it'll look like 2d with a line going through. The crystal in the DSI ducer appears to be smaller then the LSS-1, so this will work a little differently. I may buy one of these, and put it up by my HDS5 at the trolling motor. I've seen a lot of reports of people getting the very near, or exactly the quality of the images Lowrance put out.

Make sure your transducer is level, when you are scanning. This has an impact on image quality.

Couple images I found on the web from users.

Jason of lowrance posted these. Notice the speed.

As far as I know, Beagle has 3 HDS units on his rig.

We do need to do that now that the weather is decent again.

The HDS is a completely different animal than the Elite 5 DSI.

That's why I stated what units he has when you asked for his settings. They are not relevant.

Jason helped me with My Elite Max-5. It is clear as a bell. With the fish alarm on it shows more fish than I think is there, but with the info he gave me about the ping speed this thing is gooooood!

From what I can tell, that is not an option on the DSI. The operator's manual talks about selecting different frequencies but it says nothing about why you should choose one over another.
