Have you tried both frequencies? I think I'm taking my little cousin to BPS, or Cab today, I'll see if I can look at the setting on one of these. Also, maybe you could take some pics of your unit in operation, so we can see what the performance is. Take some slow trolling shots, and some 60-100% thrust trolling shots.

I think I will be able to figure it out eventually, it just would have been so much easier if they had gone to the trouble of writing an operators manual that talked about the features of the unit and not others.

I stopped and checked it out at cabelas. Looks like contrast and frequency is about the only option. It would seem that this unit is meant to be plug and play. Can you post some shots of what you are seeing at different speeds please.

I have this unit and have had it on the water twice for a short time. I am having trouble seeing the screen in sunlight. Would like any help with color settings and contrast. I'm not very good at understanding what I'm seeing, but first I have to be able to see it.

I have the exact same issue as the OP with my E-5 DSI I have mounted to my I-pilot. I run a second 2d unit next to it and it helps a lot for me. I have not figured out anything other that what you guys have already mentioned. Mine is set to purple color and I believe the fish are small whitish specs on the screen as when they appear the 2d unit shows them. The bottom and structure contour is really good and at times next to structure I can easily see the fish next to it.

    Default Elite DSI

After reading the thread the unit sounds frustrating and mediocre at best. Just an impression - not a fact. If not, it seems everyone agrees the manual is toilet paper.

While the manual is pretty much useless as a guide to setting/using the unit, the unit itself is what it is. It's only when compared to more complex units (better ??), like the HDS or SI units, that it may seem to be less than expected. I've also been told that the DVD tutorial isn't all that much help, either ... but, I have only that persons word for that, as I have not seen it. There is a generic Emulator program, that you can download to your computer, to familiarize yourself with the menu buttons & their functions. The unit, itself, has a Simulation program mode, where you can tweak settings & view the results. Any manual that would have the same amount of information, would have to be about the same size and as involved as a vehicle manual. And how many of us have actually read thru an entire vehicle manual ??

Anyone wanting to know about this unit, what it's capable of, what it's not capable of, how to use it, etc. .. then I invite them to participate in my thread (sticky at top of page). I'm not asking for, or wanting, comparisons to other units or other brands. I'm simply asking owners of this unit to join in the discussion about it, in order that we can help each other master its use & maximize it's capabilities .. such as they are.

    ... cp

I can appreciate that. A few more screen shots from you guys and you'll have a contributor rather than an obnoxious observer. Thanks.

You can go to the Lowrance web sight for an on line manual.... the best information on this unit can be found on the first thread of this sight. There are over 600 post about this unit..... you will get the answer you are looking for... bought mine about a month ago and then threw $115 at the Fishing Hot Spots E113 chip = now waiting on a 2 meg sd micro chip to arrive.... looking forward to many good hours of tight lines using this....
