i have never had to pay for updates form lowrance, just download from web site and transfer to SDcard and transfer data,
never had a problem with cust.service, and I have the 5 and 7 and 8 units.

You can go to the Lowrance download site and down load all updates for any unit and you do not have to register your unit to do so. Free.

I don't know where this charge (fee) for updates started, but it is bull.

I got the Elite 5 DSI. When it warms up enough to put it on the trolling motor, I will take some pictures and post them. The transducer bracket is $19.95 from LEI. Not a separate transducer.

I have read that you can not download anything from Lowrance on a Windows OS later than XP.

    Bluethunder,
The transducer comes with the unit, so you should not have to buy a new transducer for the 597ci HD DI. The trolling motor adapter (AD-XTM9) lists for $11.99 on the Humminbird web site. Not sure where you got the $167 price from.

If anyone is running an OS later then XP, they probably aren't running the latest in electronics. Win98 was end of life in 2006. I don't think they have emulators for any new products, so there isn't much need to download them.

I tried to download an update just this week from a Windows 7 machine and it gave me a message that system was not supported. I called customer service and they told me that they will email me the update but it has been 5 days and I am still waiting, but not holding my breath.
