OK, even though I think it's cheating:o I'm going to take the big plunge and get a GPS for the boat... maybe. But, I will not spend $500-$1500 for something that simply takes the place of my memory so here's my question. Should I spend say $300 to get a cheapo fishfinder/GPS combo or spend that money on a better hand held GPS unit that I could just mount on the boat helm? Also, any recommendations on where to buy it?
Thanx in advance for any replies, this technology thing is scary for an old fart like me but I'm getting left behind so gotta step up... maybe.

I highly recommend a mountable GPS/FF. The larger screen is way easier on older eyes than the handhelds.

I've been a little reluctant adopting new stuff, thinking it was a gimmick when color units came out, but now I can't imagine fishing without a GPS or a color depthfinder. Shut off the OB, drop the TM and pull right on top of a brushpile 500 yards from shore without hunting for it.

I have 2 chart plotters on my boat but if you are just wanting to mark brush piles--all you need is a hand held [not something high priced---I have a garmin map 76 several years old that will get me just as close as any of the bigger stuff

X2 yep frank is right - a hand held garmin $100.oo or so will be as accurate as a biggie buck FF and the hand Garmin will actually respond faster in making corrections & updates, I would use the rest of $$$ to get biggest FF screen to help old eyes.
