    Default Advice on fish finder

Hey folks, I'm looking to get either a HB 898 or 798 SI unit for my flatbottom aluminum boat. I am leaning heavily toward the 898.

Does anyone have any advice on these two units, pluses or minuses? Also, I have been reading quite a bit about how these won't work very good at speed. Is this just when using the SI ability? It seems that when using the unit in regular 2d mode, it could function like a regular FF.

Anyone have any advice in mounting to an alum jon? Most folks seem to use these units on the larger bass boats, and I'm not sure how much of this application will carry over for my purposes.

    Thanks,
    Skidz

skids I do not see why it wouldn't work. I use to use the humminbird 777 and 798(?) and had lots of trouble with the 777 trying to use it with a minnkota US2 trolling motor, couldn't keep the noise out. and got no relief from humminbird. the other unit I sold to a friend and he is happy with it. I have fished with others who have humminbirds and there screens look a little dull to me, but if your young and have good eyes no problem.

there are lots of post on here about depth finder/ locators and worth reading. give it a good look over, it will help on your decision. good luck

Well said.....if you got the extra jingle i'd suggest the 898,its amazing how much more detail the bigger screen shows.

    Skidz,
The Si can read at faster speeds than trolling type speeds but you will loose all detail in the Si images when doing this as it cannot update as fast as the conventional 2D sonar can.

The other problem you will run into (especially on an aluminum jon type boat) is mounting the transducer in a location that will allow air bubble free water to flow across the bottom and sides of the transducer. If there is air mixed in with the water it will block the 2D or Si sonar. Larger bass type boats don’t have as much problems with this due to the way they ride across the water (aluminum jon boats tend to produce more air bubbles).

Other than these two things, the unit should work the same as on a larger Bass type boat.
