That's strange, what was your voltage before hitting the starter?? I have noticed that anything below 12 vdc causes wild stuff on my HBs.![]()

Anybody else have the unit to lock up when cranking big engine? Min 997 and billblb's 997 both lock up if running and you crank the engin. PITA. We have to actually disconnect power to the head unit to get it going again.
Humminbird needs to add a simple circuit that resets the processor when the unit freezes. It is called a watchdog timer. It is simple. If the processor don't reset the WDT in a timely manner, the WDT will reset the processor.
Here is one for you to look at there if you are a lookin' Humminbird. Just saying.

It takes both Voltage and Current to maintain the power. I've seen many times voltage is fine but because they tap into existing boat wiring or terminal block, crimp on connects, glass fuse holders current is lost and can lock up the unit. I recommend powering direct from the battery with soldered connections.

Hey canepole. I have seen this identical issue with 2 units on other boats. Funny though neither of my H birds do it but I have the 7 and 11 series. I am beginning to think this particular issue is 997 only..
gotta a 997, 225 merc. no lock-up issues.
My 997 does this but its an intermittent problem. While my boat is in dry dock ( for stick steering conversion ) I replaced my starter marine battery with a deep cycle one. If this alleviates the problem I will update.
My thinking ( may be faulty ) is that it is an amperage problem rather than a voltage problem. Starters on anything tend to " hog " the juice. If my seat pedestals ever get here I will test theory out. But will wait until I am sure before I comment again. Like I said the probelm is intermittent and those can be a bugger to solve.

You prob right about the battery analysis, but my 797 nor my lowrance lcx27 nor my laptop reset when running and engine starts. I have a new crank battery too (wal mart everstart). I am sure it is a load problem or a noise impulse problem at starting. I only have problem with the 997.
