The second bottom is a reflection as you are in such shallow water. Try reducing the sensitivity and that should clean things up. I'm still learning mine.

My 788 jumps around in 6.5 and under ft. of water. It will show two different bottoms and if I am not paying close attention I break off a lot.Any new fix for this?

We have just released software for shallow water issue. Go to Humminbird.com and download the latest software.
My 788ci did not start showing the two bottoms in shallow water until I did the update. It does not bother me. That is the way my old fish finder worked. Is there a way to set the bottom of the screen so it will always stay on say 40 ft. I cut auto depth off but the bottom of the screen will still jump up and down when I go from deep to shallow. I would like the bottom of the screen to stay at 40 ft. Thanks for the help.
Sometimes you need to find a balance between the sensitivity and the surface clutter settings. I find that I have to do this each time I go out as the water conditions change from lake to lake, or even from area to area on the same lake.

CAPP,
Did you try loading the latest 4.960 software?
The Sensitivity adjustment will not help the unit track the correct bottom reading on our units but at those water depths you can try adjusting the Surface Clutter menu which may help.
Fishon!SC,
Was this the latest 4.960 software that you loaded?
To make the unit show only to the 40 foot mark; set the Lower Range menu setting to 40 feet.
