I just got a little flat-back canoe yesterday and I have a Lowrance Mark5 ordered to go on it. Since it's a flat-back canoe I was planning on mounting the transducer on the transom. This one has what looks like a small flat area for mounting one fabricated into it. But I thought I'd ask some folks that have a lot more experience than I do (which is absolutely none).
I've included a picture of the transom (the flat part is on the upper left as you look at the pic). It looks like it would mount nicely there, I'm just wondering if I should maybe just mount it to the 30/30 TM I'm putting on it instead so that I don't have to worry about damaging the transducer when I'm loading/unloading the canoe on top of my car etc.

I use a portable fish finder with the transducer on a rod that clamps on the transome. I love the way it is so easy to use it from one boat to another and its never in the way. No holes-no problems.
I could probably epoxy it under the rear seating area so it didn't get kicked around, i just didn't know if I'd want to do that and lose out on the water temp feature... but the hull's a very thin plastic type, so it would probably still be fairly accurate after a bit of time in the water.
@Blue Duck: Did your portable come with that rod, or did you buy or craft it? I have seen some side mount transducer brackets and I guess that is a possibility too.
WOuld somethign like that be better than the Trolling Motor Mount though? I guess with either of the other two methods if I decided to fish a lake with a no-motor policy I could still use my Fish Finder.

A friend of mine has one of these and works real well.

Thanks Jethro that looks pretty promising, gives me portability and a solid mount.
