HB GPS - Internal or External

I couldn't find any info as to the advantages, or I simply missed it during my search.

I'm looking at the HB's and notice the GPS is an option either internally or externally. Is there any advantage to either one? I would think I'd rather have an internal GPS so as not to have to fool with an antenna, but I don't want to overlook anything.

if you use you gps to monitor your speed while trolling then you need to get the external because the speed will bounce around quiet a bit on the internal i have a 787cI and i sent it back twice for repairs and finally had to hook up a external receiver to it no more problems after i did this

internal will lose signal a lot.

I'm running a Garmin internal, never a problem with my open tiller steer boat. External is a must if you have a in dash mount, cabin or top obstructing the units view of the sky.

One consideration is the proximity of the GPS receiver to the depth transducer to prevent built-in offset errors when marking way points based on underwater objects. You will want them mounted as close to each other as is practical. External receivers allows this to be done easier with the transom mount transducers. I also believe the 50 channel externals are more sensitive because they are normally mounted where you don't worry about accidentally blocking the signal where you sit or place equipment, etc.

As usual, it depends, imo. I've like the internal. You don't have any more wires to run, puck to knock off, or get in the way. Mine is 788ci is mounted right beside the TM, but there will be an offset for the console marks (from there to transom) but that should not be a problem. If you can get close, say within 15', then you will be looking anyway. I don't think there is many gps units that can get that close every time, at least in a ff anyhow. I will say that I block my own signal for my ff when it's on the bow. LOL I have to lean or move a little bit every once in a while. You might not have to do that if the puck was in the middle of the boat and no one was around it.
I haven't noticed any speed problems with my 788ci.

Internal doesn't work as good as the external on cloudy days and under bridges.
