Either will work OK I guess but I like the external better. One consideration is the proximity of the GPS receiver to the depth transducer to prevent built-in offset errors when marking way points based on underwater objects. You will want them mounted as close to each other as is practical. External receivers allows this to be done easier with the transom mount transducers. I also believe the 50 channel externals are more sensitive because they are normally mounted where you don't worry about accidentally blocking the signal where you sit or place equipment, etc.
