Default Converting select to variable speed?

I bought a used 74 maxxum with select speed and I was wondering if they can be converted to variable speed and if so what is needed and involved? I thought I read somewhere that you could do this but have not been able to find much on the subject!

Okay, this is just an idea. I was planning to convert a trolling motor a while back, and ended up trading motors with a buddy, so I never actually tried it. My thought was to install a 12v dimmer switch on the power cable. I even found some on e-bay (pretty cheap, around $25) that worked off of a small key fob style remote control. The dimmer I was looking at was designed and marketed for use with these neon lights that all the kids are installing on their vehicles.

I am no electrician, but I see no reason that a dimmer switch would not work. Maybe someone else, with a little actual experience with electrical circuits could chime in on this idea.

If you do end up trying it, be sure to let me know how it works.

Give TNT a holler. He build one for the minnkota. See if it will work for you.

You will need a dc motor speed control circuit capable of handling the current.
I recommend a circuit capable of handling about twice the required locked rotor current.

You can purchase pwm dc motor speed control circuits on ebay, then you have to waterproof them. It can be done at a cost.

4QD makes great motor speed controls. I have used them in robots. MOAO.

I am glad to know an expert!!! I sure have wasted a lot of money over the years with all of my, "Well, I don't know why this wouldn't work..." projects.:D:D:D I may have to pick your brain about a few things in the future, Cane Pole.

Don't wait too long to pick. The only thing I have planned for in the future is my funeral.
