CLEAR MODE advantages:
Great shallow water performance, eliminates surface clutter
A clean screen without a lot of screen clutter associated with particles in the water, etc.
Works well in rough, turbulent water
Compensates for differences in strengths of return due to depth differences

MAX MODE advantages:
Incredible detail of structure and fish
Excellent lure tracking performance
See tiniest subsurface objects, including thermoclines, water currents, and plankton

When I did the last update I failed to restore the factory defaults prior to updating, what if anything bad can happen and how does one "fix" anything that may have gotten out of whack?

You would have known if you would have had any problems. By restoring factory defaults before and after loading software will be your best bet.

will my 797 update in january?

This is a different update than the Down Imaging software. This adds some other features and it is not available yet for the 797 units (and I’m not sure when they will have it ready) but I expect that the 4.700 software will be available for the 797 way before January. There are lots of units that this software will be released for and in the meantime the Engineers still have to get all of the new 2010 model units ready too, so they are quite busy. So it could be weeks before the 4.700 software is ready for all of the units including your 797 unit.

At this point in time all we have is snap shots. Here are somemore snap shots of the new Down Imaging coming January.
