Each lake ,the depth is relavent to average depth and water color. Here our local lake except for the river channels is 2 to 8' deep. The water is stained to muddy most of the year. We catch fish close to the bottom most of the year in 5 to 8'. But during the spawn at normal levels the Crappie may spawn in 1' of water.
I do best on the channels and humps out from spawning coves. Sink cover at several depths as Crappie move alot during pre , during, and post spawn.
If you want to use cane in shallow water try this.
Take a plastic 5 gallon bucket lid , bore holes with a lockset drill saw. Don't cut out hole completely. Push the bamboo 1/2 way through (all one direction). Then tie the butts ends together. Weight middle and butt end. Thish makes like a laying down tree. I have made them in the past 20' long !
