I use a cast net to catch shad for bait in the Red River. When I get set up I take about four big shad and cut them up into chunks and throw the out around the boat to get a lot of scent in the water. Works for me.

I just use soured wheat and dump 3 - 4 pounds out and start slip corking over it.
Friend of mine (riverscum) hangs chum bag above his fishing light
and fills it with ground up shad (he carries hand meat grinder on boat)

also, if your out in the day time, you can put the fish chunks in an onion/potato sack. tie the sack up your anchor rope a couple feet.
I chum quite a bit, and not just for cats.
