    Default A new crappie.com friend

I had a call a few weeks ago from Dan in Colorado, wanting to know about fishing at Cane Creek. Dan had gone to Mississippi a couple of years back and caught several crappie at Grenada over 3lbs. and had them mounted and would like to try for a 3 lb black crappie to go on the wall with them. He had been seeing my post of my buddy Steve's 3 lbers. He had a few days the first of Dec. he might be able to come down. Well when I posted that string of big crappie Steve caught on Thanksgiving, Dan called back and said he was headed this way. Dan called me monday Dec. 1 and had made it down and had fished that day with no luck and we talked about how deep to fish and techniques. I took a half a day off Tues. and my brother and I headed to Cane Creek, we picked up some rosie reds and got an extra bag for Dan because they were out at the bait store in Star City. We met Dan on the lake and talked a bit and Dan was in a good spot that had produced for me before, so we went on to another spot. I caught a good one and my brother caught his 3lb. 5oz. fish, I called Dan and told him to come on over. Dan was fishing near us when I caught my first over 3 lb. We fished That day and Wed. and Sat around Dan, and really enjoyed visiting with him. Dan came a long way with his truck camper, boat and his labrador retreiver with the goal of a 3lb. Cane Creek beauty. Dan didn't get one while we were fishing but caught some nice ones. Dan caught his first one over 3, Thursday afternoon in some very cold and windy conditions. And caught another early Sat. morning before I got out on the lake. I enjoyed being around Dan, a really nice guy and a lot of fun to fish with. A pretty dedicated crappie fisherman that stays after them with a terribly slow bite. Dan is Daniel on the forum.

    Dan with a 2lb 8oz. Wednesday.

Dan with his two trophy crappie over 3lb.

I didn't fish Sun, but Dan was going to fish early then head back to Colorado, hope to see you again someday Dan, enjoyed it.

    A bad day of fishing
beats a good day at work.

    Jerry,
You are right about Dan being a very nice fella and a dedicated crappie fisherman. I spoke with Dan last Thursday afternoon before launching my boat at CC and Dan said he was going to lay off because of the wind. He even gave me a few short shank # 4's to fish with. I had just started fishing when I saw his boat go by me thru the timber. We both fished all afternoon and arrived back at the ramp about the same time. The first thing he said to me was "Well I got my three pounder"! He was so excited he had already call his wife to tell her. I left him a bucket of large size rosie reds thinking I would be able to buy some more in Monticello but there were none to be found. That is why I wound up trolling cranks on LM Saturday. Fishermen from all over the country come to CC to catch the big one. I also saw folks from Okla and Mo that afternoon.

Jerry, I went to cane creek sat. and missed one. Had no success after that, but, it is a very promising lake, overall, I did enjoy every bit of just being there for the first time. Also, where is that store where the rosie reds are located? I will be coming from Memphis off of I-40. Thanks alot!!

The store is located on the north end of Star City as you come into town on hwy 425. It is on the right next to the Subway. It is a western store and bait shop. Good luck.
