For me, with the clear water and the fish relatively shallow at the top of the hydrilla, which right now is about 6 ft from the top. It is really high in the water early in the fall when the water is warm but sinks as the surface temps cool. I do better by casting away from the boat, find an under water top or structure and back off and cast to it. This is with a shiner and cork, or floating a jig under a cork. Use the long poles, so with that much line out and 5 to 6 ft. of line down from the cork, you can get a better hook set with a longer pole than with a short rod and reel. When it's warmer like early fall and the water is above 60 degrees I like to cast a small spinner like a roadrunner.
A bad day of fishing
beats a good day at work.
