I’m sure there’s plenty of threads out there about this but there’s always new technology coming out. So what’s everyone’s favorite fillet knife? I’ve been using the cheaper Rapala electric knife and it seems ok but has trouble getting through some of the bigger fish. My stand by is the trusty wood handle Rapala knife but can’t decide if I want to ditch the electric all together or see what else is out there. I’ve heard lots of talk of just using a cheap electric bread/carving knife so I may steal the wife’s out of the kitchen and try it as well. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I bought into the whole bubba blade hype and got the 9” thin fillet knife and man was I glad I did! Cuts thru the crappie like butter. I checked out YouTube to see how everyone was using it and found a pretty good vid that explains technique. Took a min to get the hang but now it’s easy. Got tired of fighting my electric knife and blades etc.
American angler
American Angler all the way. Just be sure it's made in Walnut Ridge, AR and not a Chinese knockoff. Bought one of those for my son in law on ebay from grizzly jig and it's not worth a, well you know. Of course I thought it was an AA, but I learned that lesson the hard way. I've used mine for several years and probably fillet 200 lb's of crappie a year and it's still going. Get the shark blades too. I used to go through 2 or 3 of the Walmart $10 - $15 kitchen electric knives a year but they always fail in the middle of cleaning fish, what a pain. My AA will get so hot cleaning big crappie I have to wear a glove, but it's still going. Worth everything I paid for it.
They don't make the 12 volt american angler any more. But they do have a 110 volt that's 90 bucks at Wal Mart very powerful if you clean a lot of fish it's worth the money!

Another vote for the cheapo Hamilton Beach wally world knife. Love the flexibility of the blades vs the higher priced stiff ones.

I have several manual knives . From hand made ( by Slackline ) to Rapala. Most will work if you keep them sharp .

Not sure what is going on in your particular instances...but I have 2 american anglers,a mister twister,and a rapala. They all work,the american angler get hotter than the others but have a little more power. Larger crappie and white bass etc are tougher to clean than small ones. That's why I only catch the little ones LOL>
I do like my shark blades for the heavier boned fish...those skinny blades are wicked. I keep a rat tail diamond sharpen my own blades it's easy. I think plastic boards dull them faster than wood.
As far as fixed blade knives... The steel varies quite a bit in them. Seems like most of them now don't have enough carbon in them now for my taste. I hear a lot about the Dexter blades but don't own one. I have cleaned a lot of fish with the Rapalas.
My brother in law bought me a hand made ,custom made one that a guy makes from I think chisel plow or disc blades? Been a long time can't remember. But anyway I use to clean spoon bill below Kentucky Dam with it. We use to draw quite a crowd back in the day watching us. A man walked down the rip rap one day and ask me to show him my knife. He said" I just had to see it,looks like your just waving that thing at those fish and they fall apart." It was the most flexible,thinnest,sharpest thing I ever had. Course I didn't tell him I wasn't cuttin through any bone. Anyway,left it on the rocks one night in a hurry and lost it. Made me sick....showed me what a fillet knife could be though....
