    Default Whitehall...Old River

I went there today because I knew I could get out of the wind. It was 15 to 30 today. I was shielded from the wind by the levee and tree line on the bank. The Mississippi appeared to be in there about 6 to 8 feet. I knew it would be tough fishing with the river up ,but it is on a slow drop, and i had my fingers crossed. No luck there, i caught three huge gar...

Chris, I drove the levee down to Midway and it looks great. It was white capping there. I think I will try it there next weekend if the wind cooperates. I don't know why that lake holds big crappie, but it does.

I've never had too much success at Whitehall, probably because I never fished it very much. I know that you faced tough conditions if the river was falling out of there. Hopefully the fishing at Midway will be back to normal...Did you get a water temp at Whitehall? I was just wondering if the river water was cool or warm???

Surprising...You know in the spring when the river usually gets into the oxbows, it's from the ice melting up north. It's really cold then; sometimes you even see ice floating down the river. Warmer river water entering the oxbow will make 'em jump in the boat.

When you were at Midway last (before filling back up). What did the buckbrush look like? Was there any grass growing in the dried up places? Just wondering if the new water would send 'em scurrying towards the shallows.

I was last at Midway fall of 05, the water was very shallow then. I figure I did not want to mess with it in the spring due to water was out of buckbrush, or appeared to be. I boated to little Killdee and it was but about two foot deep.

I saw no grass today, the water looked good and clear. It is just over the banks in most places. It ought to be good fishing there, I've done good on Midway with the water higher than it is now, but while river is falling out

You ought to see the grass growing at Horseshoe. In some places where there is 2 or 3 feet of water. grass is 3 or 4 foot tall. Straight across from Snowdens where the lillypads start, alot of grass in that area.

Apparently someone has thrown out alot of xmas trees in the water in front of Snowdens, my graph is showing alot of something in 22 feet of water, the fish are suspended right above it.

Grass was up in a lot of places at Midway before the rise. I had never seen the lake that low.

After fishing on that lake for over 15yrs, that is the worst shape that I've ever seen it in. Can't wait to get back out there on those Midway Hawgs. Now just watch, the river probably won't stay out of it long enough to fish it.
