As crazy as it may seem, the first 2 drift socks I got were only 18". Got them at a real bargain at Academy just to see if it worked, and they work really well. The pair I got in yesterday are 42". I carry some chain, but have only used it once except to anchor on a spot. If I still can't get slow as I need to be, I change styles of fishing, or fish upwind. I bet those big socks like ya'll are using really put the brakes on.
I use two 18" socks on the front of my boat to keep it from bouncing as hard in rough water.
To really slow down with socks, you gotta get some BIG ones. 66" are good.
Fishing upwind is tough on a rough day. With the waves hitting the front of the boat, it makes 10x's the noise also unless you use a Silent Stalker to deaden the sound. You bounce harder also.
