I use chains in cover like trees and stumps, but use socks in open water. I have used both at the same time when the wind was howling.

I was advised about the size from ATM on the Sippi board. He fishes a 21' tin boat. He uses the 66", but had tried the new 78", and sent them back for the 66's. Said the bigger ones were longer and had to much water volume.

As crazy as it may seem, the first 2 drift socks I got were only 18". Got them at a real bargain at Academy just to see if it worked, and they work really well. The pair I got in yesterday are 42". I carry some chain, but have only used it once except to anchor on a spot. If I still can't get slow as I need to be, I change styles of fishing, or fish upwind. I bet those big socks like ya'll are using really put the brakes on.

I believe its 3/8" chain... I got a 25 feet of rope on each... Let it out as much or little as needed to control desired speed
I use two 18" socks on the front of my boat to keep it from bouncing as hard in rough water.
To really slow down with socks, you gotta get some BIG ones. 66" are good.
Fishing upwind is tough on a rough day. With the waves hitting the front of the boat, it makes 10x's the noise also unless you use a Silent Stalker to deaden the sound. You bounce harder also.

You can if the wind pushes you to hard. It's tough to go 1mph with the big socks tho. Might try a smaller set like the 18-36" range and use your main engine to get the speed right. I use 2 18" for pulling cranks with my main engine. I have some 36" ones also if I'm going with the wind and using my main engine. Easier with the TM going with the wind tho.

I use 6' of 1/2" chain in the timber. I also have some shorter pieces I add to them if I need to.
I also have and use three links of barge chain on each side. Each link is 7" long and 4" tall and they are 3/4" diameter.
I keep 50' of line on each. The more line out, the more drag you get and slower you go.
