Cold Water Safety

Last Monday, I bundled Jacob up for some early morning slab busting in the pool. We put 6 keepers in the boat quickly as the sun was peaking over the horizon. Air temp was just above freezing. Jacob is five going on 18 and listens as well as his daddy. After about the 5th warning that he needed to quit leaning out of the boat, he took an early morning Lake Conway bath. I yanked him out of the water right away and rush him back to the truck to dry off and warm up. Needless to say our fishing day was over. Jacob had his life jacket on like he was supposed to. This is just a reminder that we should all consider wearing our life jackets when it is this cold out. It doesn't take long before hypothermia kicks in. If is also a good idea to have a set of warm dry clothes in the truck for situations like this. Jacob acted like nothing happened at all but his momma about killed the both of us and put an end to his winter fishing this year.

You play around the water, you're gonna get wet sooner or later. It's best to assume you're gonna take a swim every time you go. For me in the winter, I put away the inflatable jackets and break out the regular foam vest. On the colder days, I wear neoprene chest waders with that. Jacob learned a little chili lesson this year that may save his life later on. I have only been on one fall swim this year. Unfortunately it was with my chainsaw.

Everyone be safe, and if you don't plan to be, just put in your will that your GPS coordinates go to RCC.

I heard about your son falling overboard and thank the good lord he is OK and was wearing his vest, yes the cold water can zap your energy quick. I wear one also always when its cold out.

Praise the Lord he is safe....You will be lucky to get Jacob out of the house in July now...and you will hear about this a long time to come. Just wait til the Grand Mothers get you cornered, can we get some pic's of your black eye...lol

Great post.Glad your son is safe.Bought a Bass Pro inflatable life vest and wear it all the time now.After watching you guy's put in brush piles was amazed how they worked even in cold wet weather.Thanks D-10 always learning from your post.Thanks again for the work and hours you put in.HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

Boys got some hard lessons to learn. Tell mom its better they be learned with Daddy than without. Sure glad everything turned out good.

He will remember that bath for many years. Nothing like a dunk in ice water ! Poor little guy probably took awhile to warm up .
