Don't ever be afraid to look shallow in the summer. There is a lot more oxygen in the water and there will be crappie there just have to find them. Don't matter how deep the lake is.
I'm no pro but here on Nimrod I have seen Crappie caught fishing 18'' deep at times in over 100 degree weather. Nimrod has so much vegatation flooded every year the oxygen content can get real low. Bait and fish will find a confort zone in my opinion either deep on a drop off or shallow on the flats.
