I really need a new finder on the front of my boat but I can't turn loose of the money. I don't care as much about the side imaging ones but that down imaging is nearly a must. They make a model, not sure the number but its a hummer that was on sale for just under $500 that's the HD, DI, Combo version, buddy got one and I like it. I've got a lowrance on the front that the crystal is going out, 25 fow looks like 5 fow so you don't know if it's 15, 25, or 35 and that sucks! If I was going to get one it would be the Hummers.

side imaging is a big step up from down imaging

Side imaging is a game changer. You can cover a wide swath of water, even in shallow water vs down imaging. The speed in which you can find where to fish on lakes you have never fished is amazing. I like going to new lakes to fish and enjoy the challenge of finding the fish and figuring out how to catch them. Side imaging makes the task alot faster.

Buy what u can afford or save up. Dow imaging is very nice but u must be right over structure to see it. The sonar will show a blob as the cone on it is bigger. Side imaging you can scan 3 x the water depth generally. So if in 10 ft water thats 30 ft to right and 40 to left. Way more effective. Not gonna push any brand but i have ha the hummer di and no comparison tot lowrance. I am not a sponsor or prostaff just a believer lol. I have no bone in what ya buy just hope i gave you a little more insight.
