Default DD learning to fish Texas

Well going from fishing Lake Conway and Nimrod to fishing Galveston Bay and Lake Livingston has been like going back to the first grade. We moved from Little Rock to Houston 6 months ago, This weekend I feel like I graduated to the second grade. Saturday Cylinda and I went to Livingston and fished all weekend. Caught a baker’s dozen yesterday morning and only two that evening. This morning caught ten more by nine thirty. The lake has a 10 inch slot so I guess I caught just as many I had to throw back. Most of the keepers were 11 to 12 inches with a few that were almost 14 inches. Found out the monsters will move in the creek next month that are 15/16 inches. I will be going back.

Last week the water was calm in the Gulf so I took my little 16 foot boat out to the end of the south jetty in Galveston. It extends out about a mile long into the Gulf. Everyone in their big 40 foot fishing rigs had quite a laugh when I pulled up in my little boat and asked if they knew which way is it to Key West.

We caught eight or nine sheephead that were between four and five pounds. Now I gotta say, that was fun. I have a few pic from both trips attached.

    Hope to be home soon.

Well I know how you feel about the new water. I've noticed in SE OK those crappie lakes have good numbers but on the small side also. At least finding them isn't too bad when you can catch good numbers, you can pattern them easier and weed through the smaller ones. I've found those smaller ones are best with really hot grease and pretty much drop the fillets in and take them right back out in just a few minutes. I filleted a bunch of those smaller ones and they fry up nicely. You gotta be careful with the EL fillet Knife though as you'll cut right through the backbones.

Glad your learning. Them Sheepheads are not bad eating. Not much meat on them but cooks up good. I caught some in Lousiana a few years ago. Filleted those and bought fresh gulf shrimp, sure ate good.

Lake Livingston is a big, very nice lake! I can remember bass fishing it with my uncle who lived on the lake many moons ago. That was long before i was the crappie extraordinaire I am today! hahaha Good catch!

Your right! after we filleted the sheepheads I was suprised at how much meat we ended up with. How is fishing going on Nimrod. I havent been able to keep up on crappie.com for the past several months. I am tickled pink with the fishing this weekend on Livingston. It was just a stab in the dark not knowing the lake. Two guys that have fished this creek for 15 years came in with their ice chest full. Hope after a few more trips I'll get a limit.

Looks Like fishing Tx has been good for you. I have caught some of those sheepheads also. Do not stick ur finger in thier mouth for sure. Its like catching 3 to 10 pound bream. My Favorite eating inland fish is those Sea Trout, have you had a chance to catch and eat some of those Yet? I love Ocean fishing sure is Fun Stuff.

Last month I caught 4 speckled trout and a Red Drum that I cleaned before I thought about pictures. They were only about a 1 1/2lbs but there sure were good. The Red Drum I'm guessing was about 12 lbs. Almost threw it back because coming from Arkansas I'm thinking a drum is a trash fish. Glad I didn't because Red Drum here are a prize. Also the weekend after that we caught two Flounder which are still in the freezer. One was 14" and 18". Wish we had caught a few more but I figure they will taste just as good with a bunch of Crappie.... attached is one of the Flounder we caught
