I would spend as much as I could afford, however if you don't want to do that the low end finders work well. I have a Humminbird 718 and have interfaced a $50 gps to it and it has worked for me. Of course, I look every few days at the nicer equipment.

The DI is definitely an advantage. I just bought a new boat and had a HB 788ci with DI installed on the console. I really like to split the screen where I can view the 2D sonar and DI at the same time. The 2D will pick up more stuff but the DI allows me to discern what the "stuff" is. You can most certainly tell when there are fish holding on a brushpile. They show up as little white ovals in and around the limbs of the pile. There's been plenty of times I've seen things on the 2D and just wasn't sure what it was. I will look down at the DI image and it is quite obvious what I'm looking at. Trees and and rocks actually look like what they are and schools of bait look like clouds and you can literally tell if the bait fish are tightly clustered or spread out some. It is truly awesome! I have a cheaper unit on the front, it's a 570 and it's a pretty good unit but does not hold a candle to the 788. I will probably be upgrading the front unit in the near future to another DI unit. If you've got the funds I would recommend one, you won't be let down.

I just googled the HB 788ci DI and it was $799.99. Nice unit and in the can do price range! Cool

Tattoo the password on your forehead backward that way when you see the reflection on your screen you'll know it. Best fishfinder I ever seen was me in the front of the boat.
