    Default How fast are you??

Met Nimrod at the lake the other day and he showed off his crappie filleting skills. Took about 15 seconds I guess. Took me 15 minutes to do these today. Think I need more practice.Name: fishfry.jpg

    Hey Nimrod,

I think you get more practice than most people! That's a good thing, and my hat's off to you.

I'm sure not that fast even with an electric knife, but I usually get a lot more meat than some folks I fish with who are faster. I had a grandmother and mother who wasted nothing, and I guess that's part of the problem.

I'm not suggesting Nimrod isn't fast as lightning and wasting nothing at all by this. Back in the dark ages when I was in high school I worked for a fellow who owned a wholesale grocery and part of my job duties were helping him run his fiddler traps (illegal, but that's a whole story in itself). He could skin out a catfish so fast it was unbelievable because of all the practice he had had all his life. I got much better, but I bet he could do 3 or 4 to my one. Later he told me about going on the lower White River with a guy who had done well in business near Jonesboro and loved to catfish. The fellow had a cabin with concrete bait tanks full of goldfish with aerators, a tremendous fish cleaning area and I believe he said walk in freezers, but if not, lots of big chest freezers. He said they would put out 100 20 hook throw lines a night and caught the dickens out of catfish. He said this guy could skin several catfish for everyone he did. I would have paid money to see it.

My aunt worked in a trout processing facility years ago. She cleaned and deboned 10 while I cleaned one. I like the electric knife and hardly ever use the regular knife anymore. Practice does help.

I wouldn't keep fish if the electric knife wasn't invented.

I perfer the old fashion fillet knives. Looks like lots of waste using electric then have to go back and cut out ribs. I doubt I'll change even though the Electric knife users got us out numbered.

I filet and cut off skins and then come back with a regular filet knife to cut out the rib bones after I've done several.
