It’s cold outside , time to tie jigs and think about fishing .

I primarily fish with what I call micro jigs .
I used to be primarily an ultralight spinning nut and a warm water fly fishing fanatic.
But because of the wear and tear of flycasting , I’ve gravitated toward mostly ultralight spinning .
I’ve always wanted to duplicate my experience with fly tying and flyfishing into UL spinning .
Casting tiny baits using UL spinning rods was a big challenge until I discovered 2# line and tungsten beads for fly tying.

Of course , most of time , being a bank fisherman 95% or more of the time , the longer the cast , the greater amount of water can be covered.

Even with tungsten, I’m limited to the bead size in order to keep my baits proportional.
A 4.6mm is about max and that will give me a jig that just under a 1/32oz , just around .88g.

Some of you may remember my driveway casting experiments .
I found that with action and power of a rod was a factor , but also the size of the first couple of guides . Bigger diameter guides would , especially the first two would allow the coils of line to feed quicker through the rest of the guides . Sort of funnel the line into the other guides .
I had thought a larger spool reel , with larger stripper guides would be the optimal combination.
But , I got to thinking , what if I used a smaller , 500 size reel with the larger stripper guides?
In my experiments I did notice reel size with the newer micro guides didn’t make a big difference in distance.
Smaller coils should enter the larger stripper guides easier and would funnel through the other guides faster than the larger coils coming off , say a 2000 size spool .
I’m switching some of my reels back over to 2# and 3# Floroclear for some cold water float fishing and will be using a 500 size reel , with a 6’6” or 7’ UL rod with large stripper guides with the hope of fishing a little more area .
I’m making the switch back to Floroclear because of the wind blowing a huge loop in the braid I’ve been using, robbing me of distance and making me have to “mend” the wind drift out of my line .
I hope some of you find my ramblings on this subject useful .
