Thread: Ultralight Rods Relating to Panfish #2

Bought a couple of rods lately and wanted to provide some feedback on the shipping experience.

No issues as always when purchasing through JDM Tackle Heaven. I had to wait like 3-4 days for the rod to come back in stock. Once it did, it took about 20 hours to ship from Japan to my house in TN. Fantastic shipping with their usual grey PVC pipe and wrapped up in bubble wrap. I feel like the $30 to ship it is money well spent. I’ve never had any issues and I’ve bought 5 rods from them.

On the other hand, another bought a rod from a store on buyee.jp and it came in long rectangle soft sided box. The box looked like it had a rough flight over and I was pretty nervous when it was delivered. Fortunately the rod was fine despite the box condition and no bubble wrap on the inside. The only thing in the box was the rod pouch with the rod inside.

I was lucky in this case and will be checking with storefronts that sell on buyee.jp how they ship rods if I decide to buy another one this way. I would classify this as a higher risk purchase so I’d recommend to do some homework on the sellers - or stick with the usual places.

Welp. Finally broke down and bought a new rod. Have had my eye on a handful of Megabass trout and light bass rods for a while. I wanted something a little softer in the tip than what I've been using to be more crappie friendly but with more backbone to handle very frequent bass bycatch and for trout season coming up. Ended up going with the Megabass Triza Yamasemi which is a 3 piece rod that comes with 2 different tips. A tubular fast action one and a solid XF one. I've really been wanting to try out a Triza to see how they feel compared to one piece rods, I'm glad I finally took the plunge. It's rated about 1-5 grams and 3-8lb so it ought to be perfect for everything I plan to throw. Though it's a bass rod, the JDM description for the rod actually mentions mebaru and aji when talking about the different tips so I think the rod is likely to be a nice fit for me. Scary buying a rod there aren't really any reviews for, especially when I have no intention of using it for the intended species but my panfishing kinda tends more to light than true UL anyway so I'm optimistic.

Shouldn't be spending money on the rod in the first place so I really couldn't justify a Vanquish to go with it lol. That'll have to wait.

Nice. Where did you end up picking it up from? I like the idea of a solid and tubular tip section for the options. I prefer a tubular tip, but sometimes the fast twitch response of a solid tip is really nice.

Got it from japanlureshop. Was unavailable on plat/digitaka and a little more expensive on jdmtackleheaven. Forgot to look on buyee to be honest, looks like I could have saved $15-20 there. Oops. I'll just pretend I paid more for faster shipping since buyee is way slower

Been a while since I bought my last rod or somewhat pricey JDM thing. I miss free shipping and I forgot how much PayPal robs you on the exchange rate.

The Yamasemi ended up being delayed on shipping by a couple days but still arrived pretty promptly and safely today. Fantastic packaging by japanlureshop and the little extra inclusion of a hook holder is appreciated. I wouldn't hesitate to be a repeat customer. Stunning how small the rod packs down. The tube it came in was only 29" which is crazy to me for what is at heart a bass rod. The prospect of traveling with a tiny tube of a few Trizas as a carry on for my next trip is really, really appealing.

As for the rod itself, it looks great. Each piece has a little indicator dot to make it super easy to line up the connection perfectly which is a nice touch. Curious to experiment with both the fast and solid tips for crappie. Fast tip loads nicely into a solid backbone. Solid tip feels really fun, it's what I'm looking forward to experimenting with the most. Excited to get out Wednesday and try the rod out. I really hope it works out as a heavier bluegill/crappie rod, but I can already tell it will be a killer trout and light saltwater rod which I've been lacking so I know it'll be a winner for me either way.

Got out with the Yamasemi today and only had the solid tip since it's what I was most curious to try. My usual 1gr/1.5" rig with Almight 0.4 and 4# Sniper leader. Only put in an hour or so with the rod since I went off to chase bass, but got around a dozen chunk gills, one small crappie (they've gone into hiding since it's gotten real hot) and a couple 2lb+ bass. Rod has great sensitivity and the solid tip feels like a cheat code for twitching, getting great action on the bait and loading into the fish nicely before going straight into a solid backbone. Never felt like I pulled a jig from a fish's mouth despite the XF rating. I can really see the appeal of solid tips now. Gonna bring the fast tip next time but I don't think there's any way I'll like it for the purpose of vertical jigging nearly as much.

This definitely isn't the UL rod for everyone since it's not an UL rod at all but after today, I know this is gonna be the perfect minijig rod come trout season since I never know if I'm going to hook into a 10 inch or 10lb fish. If you're in a lake with tons of white bass, black bass, other feisty bycatch or fortunate to fish one of the areas with toad coppernose or redears, this is one that you might want to consider putting on your radar.
