So here I go with light and ultralight tackle. Alphahawk Do you ever find wonderland down this rabbit hole? Have you met Alice yet?LOL Regardless... I bet you have had ball. Jim
Yes I have! I tell folks all the time one does not need JDM gear to catch fish....get a cane pole and some crickets and go at it. What I have found...and to a man I have talked with about JDM rods....is you get an advantage you did not have before. It has nothing to do with whether or not you catch more fish, or less fish than someone who uses non JDM gear. It is all about what it does for the person who uses it. I introduced my nephew to JDM several years back. He loves to fish for trout and smallmouth only....nothing else. His first rod was a BC TZ 67. After he took it out and caught around 100 trout he called just ranting and raving about the rod. He put it best when he said “I don’t get to fish much due to work...so when I go out I want all the advantage I can have”. Last year he booked a guide trip on the Little Red to learn....from the guide...how to fish the Zig Jig. You fish it by popping it up and let it fall...the trout always hit it on the fall on slack line. He smoked the guide...the guy teaching him by the way....5 fish to the guides one. Why? All because of the rod. The BC TZ is extremely sensitive and he felt way more hits than the guide who was using....well let’s just say a cheap rod with a lot of glass in it and was pretty much dead. I no longer can fish the 8-10 hours a day I could just a few years back. In the spring I can hang for about 5 hours....come summer only about 3.5 hours. I need JDM gear now more so than I did a few years back. I really want my short time on the water to be as productive as possible. I guess the only thing I use now that is not JDM is Trout Magnet bodies. The ester line which is uber sensitive.....the jig heads sharp as needles.....the reels that are as smooth as a babies behind...and last but not least the rods. It just makes for a whole lot of fun. I’ll continue on this journey until I stop fishing. There is just no turning back on this road. You try to explain to someone what it is like to fish a sub 2 ounce rod with a reel that weighs only 5.2 ounces but you can’t really explain it. I am very excited to get my hands on the 59 XUL area trout rod that is coming. I know it is very sensitive and am pretty sure it is going to have enough bend in it for me to have even more fun catching smaller bluegill and stocker trout. I spotted a guy on the Caney Fork river a few years back and I noticed he was using BFS gear.....his rod was a Major Craft BFS.....dead giveaway. I asked him “How long you been into BFS”? He was surprised I knew about his gear...until I told him about mine then he understood. I used BC reels years ago and had I not gotten into the JDM spinning gear might have gone down that road....but I can’t afford both types...and buy as much as I do. Life is good!
