Gave the Yamaga 71 TZ/Nano a workout yesterday on some nice-sized shellcrackers I found in about 15' of water. Really nice bend to the rod. Then I hooked what I estimate as a 5+ lb bass, and she pulled drag and really bent the rod. I couldn't turn her, but I got her to the boat after several hard runs and some spectacular leaps, and then she got off on the anchor rope (hook pulled out). Oh well. A little to much fish for the rod? Not really, I had 3 lb test and didn't want to break off. Think I'll go to 4 lb.

Nice looking cracker!!
Great review and nice fish! I had in a big bass yesterday with the 71 TZ Nano and it broke my line. I only had the reel spoiled with 2.3 Ester though. Waiting for the 3.5 Ester to come in.

Nice......the TZ can handle big fish. I’ve used mine for a number of years as a smallmouth rod. I use the SOS line.....which is testing out at 3.5# test......and it can handle 21 inch smallmouth with no issues. I have to say in the 6 years I’ve been using JDM UL rods the fish that can give you problems is a largemouth. Everyone always says the smallmouth fights more....which is true as it goes left, right...up....down......but in my experience the largemouth have the torque like a diesel engine. I get them in but I had just soon not hook up with them. My biggest on a JDM UL was 22 inches.....but it took a while.

Randy, you should know that was on one of the Daiwa Gekkabijin jigs I hand-tied, a gray color scheme with a little flash (1.5 g #8 hook). Had to tie another, but I went back today and got me a few more shellcrackers!
That’s great. My nephew is going to the Little Red River this weekend. One of the Trout Magnet guides has got a great technique for jigging up big rainbows. Last time out my nephew left him some of the 2 and 3 gram Daiwa jig heads for him to tie. Of course he will be using his 6’ 10” TZ. I’m going to try to get out there in September or October with my TZ.....LOL.

I use Sore Lip’Em All Guide Service. Lowell Meyers is the owner. Now for me I only spin fish.....but Lowell is a fly guy also and will do fly trips. He is a hard working guide and can put you on numbers or quality....or a combination of both. Me....I always choose numbers.....LOL. But even with that you get into a few bigger ones.
