Default Shooting Docks - Jig Choice

I have only been shooting docks 1-2 years but love it. I have only used grubs. What type of hair/feather jigs to you recommend.

    Default Shooting Docks

I use the jigs that are much like Jiffy Jigs. They all look the same to me. I only shoot 1/32 oz jigs. I believe they stay in the strike zone much longer than a 1/16 oz jig. Every once in a while I will use a 1/16 jig if it's a really deep dock and I don't have any luck with the top of the water column.

In my experience, the secret to dock shooting lies in finding good docks, not jig types. I don't understand the science behind what makes a good dock. I've seen docks that I thought would be crawling with crappie and then I couldn't buy a bite. Then, some of the best docks I know of on Weiss are nothing to look at. I think your presentation of the jig is very important too. A slow slow reel and pick up on the jig every few seconds. Bright colored line helps reveal those really light bites.

I'm a died-in-the-wool troller, but I love to take my buddies dock shooting b/c people just think it's so much fun. I'd rather troll but it is fun. Then there are those days where you keep getting hung up or the wind is wreaking havoc and I can't keep position. I've almost thrown my poles in the water before I was so frustrated!

I'm more likely to be using a 1/32 or 1/16oz weedless jighead and a Panfish Assassin ... solid body tube ... hollow body tube (in that order). Most of my hair/feather jig fishing, is done alongside bridge pilons ... or when I'm Vertical Casting around visable cover.
But ... to answer your question ... I'd use those with a chenille body wrap and marabou tail, and go to the 1/32 & 1/64 sizes -- for the simple reason of a slower fall rate.
